Map Masters

Captain Games · 2025

Editing, German edition

2025 seems to have been a good year for games that use dry-erase marker pens. In this one, players first assemble a personal dungeon from a set of random cards plus any cards purchased deckbuilder-style in a previous round, then draw pathways onto the cards. The aim is to have the pathway cross various icons as required by a random objective for the round. But getting to these usually requires detours to collect items like keys, swords or rope to get past locks, monsters or pits. The game features quirky artwork and most objectives are pretty tongue-in-cheek, like having to recover spider milk to feed to the dungeon’s most terrible and destructive force, Kitty the cat. Map Masters was really popular at SPIEL ‘25. This was a fairly straightforward job. The translation was pretty good in terms of style and content, although spelling and grammar seemed to have taken a back seat. What made this job, uh, interesting was that the designers and client were somewhat disorganised and kept sending updated, edited texts
